Weird Wacky Wednesday

At Paihia School we had a Wacky Wednesday. Wacky Wednesday is a day where you can dress up any way you want. Everyone dressed up weird and some people dressed up funny. Half of my class was dressed up and  the dressed up people got a photo taken. I only colored my hair blue and red. Not to be harley quin but just to color my hair. When I got to school everyone was wearing cool things and some people were handing out small gems that you stick on your face.

Have you ever had a Wacky Wednesday at your school?

PAL day

In Te Ngahere we did a PAL day on the last day of term 3. If you don’t know what PAL is it stands for Physical Activity Leader. I really enjoyed that day because we got to play all sorts of game that were really fun. I thought that  soccer with a big bouncy ball was quite fun because it was fun to kick over people. When we played rob the nest it was unfair because the team were not even, but then the Power leader came back and they played so the teams were fair. If we did PAL day again I would want to be a Power leader so I can teach other people how to play a game.

Have you ever done a game at school that you really enjoyed?

Fantastic 4 Shot Movie

In Te Ngahere we have been making a four shot movie. We had to make a movie that

had an establishing shot, a long shot, a medium shot and close up shot. The reason why

we did this was to learn about four different shots because we will be making small

movies about something, so now we know how to shoot an establishing shot, a long

shot, a medium shot and close up shot. The establishing shot shows you where the

movie will take place. (Ours was a picture of the Library because that was were we filmed

our movie.) A long shot shows you the characters for the first time.

(My movie showed a boy looking at a book and a girl next to him looking at it too.)

The medium shot shows more information about the people in the movie.

(So you might be able to see them better or see their emotion. We showed the boy

looking at the book but he looked really stuck on the questions.) The book the boy

was reading was called the Very Hard Math Question Book. The close up shot is pretty

much showing what the characters are doing. (Ours was a twist and we put very easy

questions in the Very Hard Math Question Book.) When we did our establishing shot

it was supposed to show the library but we did not think that was very clear because there

was no sign. I think my group did well on making the movie because it was a little bit

funny because of the close up on 1+1 =_ on the Very Hard Math Question Book. Next

time we make a movie if we film in the library we should put up a sign that says

library because it was not clear. This learning will help me in the future because now

I know how to film shots like a close up shot because we did the learning.

Nano Girl Show

In Te Ngahere we had Nano girl come to our School. I really enjoyed her show because she did a whole lot of sciencey things for us. I think what stood out to me the most was when she put some weird yellow string thing  in a big bowl full of water and then put some gas in it. Once she did that she grabbed the bubbles and put them on her hand. Then she lit the bubbles on fire but when the bubbles were almost gone she swiped her hand so the fire would disappear. I learnt that even Scientists make big mistakes because I thought that if you were a scientist you were not allowed to make mistakes.

Have you ever met Nano girl before?

Interesting Science Fair

In Te Ngahere we have been doing Science Fair. We had to research about a question we came up with and find out small things about it. My group was Marley and Jaelyn. Our question was what washing powder works the best out of Fab, Surf and Persil because we wanted to find that out. I learnt that there were more than one type of variable because I always thought that the one variable was a controlled variable. If you don’t know what a controlled variable is it is basically something you control when you are doing something. When we were doing this the thing that was most difficult was figuring out who was going to bring what because we did not know if we had what we needed to bring. If I do this again  will probably work in a group of 2 because in my group we had a hitchhiker. I think I used my Hoe of Tu Maia (Resilience) and Kaha (Being Strong) because at the start one person in my group was confused on how to write the slides and then when I talked to her for a bit she then knew what to do.

The Amazing Marble Challenge Take 2

In Te Ngahere we have been doing the Great Marble Challenge take 2. We did a take 2 because after we did the first 1 we had to say what we would of done better if we did it again. My group was Marley and Poet. We could either make a new ramp or modify our old one. We were doing this to prepare for Science Fair because we needed to learn about the scientific method and the great marble challenge had a small bit of it. When we modified our ramp all we changed was the angle by flipping over the ramp. That made a huge difference because the angle was much different. We modified our ramp because we only got 6 points when our ramp got tested and the  highest you can get is 50 points. We did better this time because we got about 18 points and before we only got 6 and 18 is much bigger than 6. I enjoyed testing the most because it was fun to see who’s ramp I got to test and how many points their ramp would get.

A Fantastic Day Out of School

In Te Ngahere we went to the Science Roadshow. I learnt that honey from different flowers tasted different.  We had to go on a school bus or car to get to Bay of Islands College. I went by car and my mum drove. Ashlyn and Mahana came in the car with us.Be sure to check out their blogs too. When we were there we got a small show about oxygen, carbon dioxide and other things. Before we left we had another show.  For that one the scientists made a firenado. If you don't know what a firenado is it is spinning fire that looks like a tornado. When the scientists running the show created this they tried just spinning the fire but nothing happened. Then they tried to use a cone that you put on a dog to stop it from itching, but nothing happened. Then they tried to use a small rubbish bin with holes and the bottom taken out. That worked because a fire needs oxygen to stay alight.

My favorite exhibit was how the same discs reacted to different surfaces because it was very interesting to see if a plastic disc went further on carpet, lino, smooth wood or rubber.

In fair testing I learnt that if you change one variable at a time you will know what helped your creation.  This will help me with my science fair project because now I understand about fair testing.

Have you ever gone to Bay of Islands College before or a Science Roadshow?

Fun and Amazing Trip to Urupukapuka Island

In Te Ngahere the year six’s went to Urupukapuka island while the year 7 and 8s went to technology. A couple of days before we went on the trip we were choosing our jobs. The teacher told us the names and we need one girl and one boy. I was told nicely to let everybody get a job because I am the Paihia School bell ringer. As they were going through the names people had to paper, scissors, rock to see who got it because lots of people put their hands up. Once the teacher called out the last name of the job nobody put their hand up so I did. The jobs were biosecurity, construction, planting and health and safety. If you were biosecurity you would check people's bags and stand on a cleaning brush so the other year sixs could clean their shoes. If you were construction you would take the rat trap parts onto the boat. (We got split into 2 groups because we had to make rat traps and plant trees. For planting you would help your group plant trees at the end of the walk. For health and safety you would mark who got on the boat, give people hand sanitizer and hold a first aid kit. On the day we had to pack a nice lunch and lots of water. I really enjoyed this trip because I learnt how to plant trees and make rat traps. Before we left the school we had to grab our school hat and school t-shirt. As we were about to get on the boat we had to line up in 2 lines so bio security could check our bags and we could clean our shoes so we didn't bring pests onto the island. Once we got on the boat be met a lichenologist called Marley. He wanted to find a new species of lichen. He didn't find a new lichen species but he did find a rare species. After we got off the boat we went to a small place for morning tea. After that we got split into 2 groups and my group had to walk up a hill to a farm and we sat on a big Pohutukawa tree for a little while. We got off the tree and walked down a hill to the campgrounds. We had to jump over a fence to plant our tree. Once we got over the fence we watched our Project Island song teacher plant a tree. Once she had done I handed out gloves to everybody because my job was planting. My group and I planted our tree and the name is a beach tree. Once everybody had done planting there tree  we walked back up a hill and went to have lunch. After lunch my group was now doing making rat traps. We made a proper rat trap and decorated it. When we decorated the rat trap we had to put the date, our names and our School names before we could color and draw pictures. When we finished we had a little more time and we were going to go for a small walk in the bush. Before we went in the bush we saw 2 adorable dogs. Those dogs were trained to find pests that came onto the island. The owner said that there were no pests on the island but  they were just looking for pests if there was any. Then we walked into the bush turned around and walked back to the deck and the other group came back.we got back on the boat and came back to Paihia. On the terrific boat ride home we saw about 10 dolphins. Have you ever seen dolphins? Have you ever been to Urupukapuka Island for the project island song?

Fantastic Smart Relationships

In Te Ngahere we have been doing Smart Relationships. For Smart Relationships we had to watch a youtube video on how to stay safe when online. We made 2 google presentations one was a DLO on how to stay safe online and the other was answering a bunch of questions. We were learning to do this because it is really important to know how to stay safe. I will stay safe in the future by not sharing personal information when i am online or in general. This is bad because if you put a picture of your car and number plate someone could track you down.

Has your class ever done something like this before? Have you ever put a picture of you, your car and your number plate online as a profile?

Fantastic Birthday

On Tuesday the 25th of May it was my birthday. I turned 10 years old and was allowed to stay home from school because 2 of my sisters were here and my niece. We opened presents and I got an Iphone 8+ from my sister Stella. My sister Stella’s boyfriend gave me a Pandora bracelet and a cat charm to put on it. I got lots of fun and amazing things. After I opened presents at my house I walked over to my Nanny and Pa`s house and opened presents from them. I got more fun and amazing things. I saw a giant rolled up present and I wanted to open that one. It was a times table sheet. I told her that I was on division but she said “you can hang it on your wall and every night before you go to sleep do one of these times tables.” I liked the sound of that.

My uncle gave me a weird squishy that had fake bones in it and he sent a card that didn't arrive on my birthday. At about lunchtime we went to the park and played cheat and gang up. Then we went home and we played rubrics race. After that we played a game called spot it. We had lots of fun but then I asked Stella what time it was. She said it was 5:15, we had to get ready because we were going out for dinner. We went to a really nice restaurant called JFC. (Just fish and chips.) My Nanny and Pa came and we had a lovely dinner. When we went home it was 7:15. We all enjoyed this day and I hope next year will be the same. What did you do for your last birthday?

Fantastic EPro 8

In Te Ngahere we have been doing EPro 8 challenges. We had to split into groups of 4. My group was Jaelyn - Marie, Shivam and Mikaira. We had to build a bridge that could hold a toy car going across it. We started making a Cable Stayed bridge but then we looked at a Truss bridge. The truss bridge looked much easier because it was basically just triangles. I learnt about 3 different bridges. Truss, Suspension and Cable Stayed.  I think my group did really well because we all worked together and made quite a good bridge. None of us felt left out because we all did our part. First we all made triangles and then we all helped to put them together. Also me and Shivam sorted all of the sticks into color piles. My groups truss bridge was different to the picture of a truss bridge because ours was wonkey, the triangles were different because ours were the same size on each side and the pictures triangles were the same on both sides but the bottom triangle was a bit bigger and it wobbled a lot. Have you ever made a bridge before? If so what type did you make?

The Amazing Cyber Smart 7

In Te Ngahere we have been doing the Cyber Smart 7 Challenge.  We were learning how to use Google drawings more confidently.  In the future this should help me if I do this again because if I do a DLO and I need to draw a picture I know how. I made a fish, jellyfish, seaweed and coral. We had to make a fish or anything out of shapes. We could of made anything but I chose a fish because it didn't look very hard. I really enjoyed making this and I hope my class does this again this year. When we did this I felt so good and then I got stuck on what else to make. I think I made a pretty good fish because I like it. I think I could've added more but I couldn't think of anything I could draw that involved the sea.

Has your class ever done the Cybersmart 7 Challenge?

The Fantastic Mothers day.

On Sunday the 9th of May it was Mothers day. My mum, Nan, Pa and I had a great day. In the morning I gave my mum her mothers day presents. She really liked them. Also I gave her 2 scratchies and she won on both. After that I went down stairs and watched a tv series. Once it was 7 o’clock in the morning I went to my Nanny’s house and gave her, her presents.

My mum made dinner and I made desert. Mum made a delicious roast lamb and potato and I made ice cream with chocolate broken in it. We did this for Nanny for Mothers day. I really enjoyed this day. I think I did well with desert because everybody liked it.

What did you do for Mothers Day?

The Hard and Amazing EPro8

In Te Ngahere we have been making catapults. We had to make a catapult that could launch a ping pong ball at least 3 meters before hitting the ground. Our teacher gave us 30 bamboo sticks, 30 rubber bands, 1 ping pong ball, scissors, string, tape, 2 A4 pieces of paper and 1 A3 piece of paper. I learnt how to make a catapult out of bamboo sticks, rubberbands, paper and tape. Before we started the EPro8 we watched a video telling us what energy we used. I found out that potential energy is when the energy is stored somewhere and kinetic energy is when energy is released. For example in rubber bands there is potential energy and when you stretch it and let it go it makes kinetic energy. In my group it was challenging because one member was helping me and the other was sometimes playing with rubber bands. I think my group did really well because we made a working catapult that traveled through the air and hit the ground at about 4.9 meters. I think my group and I could work on communicating better. Have you ever made a catapult?

The Hard and Easy Taskmaster

In Te Ngahere we did a taskmaster. It was called can you follow directions. (Apparently I can’t.) We had to follow 23 directions to test us. We were doing this to see if we follow instructions but apparently we read a small bit and think I know what I am doing instead of reading all of it. Our teachers were trying to teach us to read things carefully.  I learnt that I don’t always read things carefully. First off Whaea Becks gave us a piece of paper that had a set of instructions on it. We had to grab a pencil and put it on our desk. Our teacher put a timer on for 4 minutes. After four minutes was up our teacher gave us 30 more seconds and then an extra couple of minutes. (here is what we did on the paper.)  The first question was read everything carefully before doing anything. I read question 1 and I thought that it meant to read the question carefully before doing it, but it meant to read all of the questions first and then follow them. On question 23 it said now that you have read everything carefully. Do only sentence 1 and 2. Then quietly draw on the back. Once I got to there I new I did this test wrong. I felt so good about how far I got till I read the last question then  I knew I failed. From now on I am going to read things carefully. Do you always read things carefully?

Learning to Pronounce Te Reo Maori

In Te Ngahere we have been creating a Te Reo DLO. We were learning how to pronounce Maori words properly. I had to record myself saying the Maori alphabet, greetings and place names. I learnt that Waihopai means Invercargill in Maori. I think I did quite good when I was recording the Maori alphabet because it was easier to pronounce to words. I need to work on place names in the future because I can't say the word without something telling me the word first.

What does your classroom learn for Te Reo Maori?

The Most Fantastic Work Ever

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about smart surfing. Smart surfing is where you have a sentence: (for example) Where do Green geckos live? You would highlight the keywords in that sentence. You would find the key words in the sentence (green geckos live) and search the web for it. Then we had to research those key words and link the information we found. I learnt that if you use keywords you get the right information you need, because when you research lots of words, Google gives you any search created with those words included. Have you ever just used keywords to research? If so did you get the information you needed?

The Best Work I Have Ever Done

In Te Ngahere we have been doing something called Coastal Seas. We had to watch a documentary about Coastal Seas by David Attenborough. I learnt that seagrass captures carbon dioxide. While we were watching the video we had to write down over ten facts about Coastal Seas and what lives in them, like coral, seagrass, mangroves, sharks, dolphins and other marine life. After that, we had to add pictures to our facts.  Have you ever watched a David Attenborough video? If so which one did you watch?

The Fantastic Walk to Greens

In Te Ngahere we walked to Greens. We walked to Greens because it was Shivam’s Birthday. (Shivam is a student in our class.) We went there because Shivam’s parents own Greens. We loved that so much. My friends and I loved it because the people at Greens were so nice because they served almost 60 kids in our class. We loved the food we ate. On our plates we had butter chicken in two places, two bits of naan bread, a big pile of rice and a clear space that was for other food if we didn’t get butter chicken. We acknowledged Shivam by giving him a card. The card was made by Angela and Jade.R but some of the class signed it. (Angela and Jade.R are two students in our class.) At the end there was a surprise. We got easter eggs. Some people got pineapple lump chocolate and some got fredo chocolate. They came in trolley filled with boxes of eggs, we thought it was so nice of them. We said thank You by singing waiata. Have you ever been to greens?

!The Creative TaskMaster Challenge!

In Te Ngahere we have been doing something called taskmaster. Our activity was called copy the picture challenge. We had to copy a picture that our teacher Whaea Becks had drawn. After she drew it she hung it up outside our class window.  Breeze was the drawer for my group and she got frustrated because me and my runner buddy were telling her the picture and then forgetting the color. I learnt that it is really hard to describe a picture and say where it goes on the page without touching the paper.  My groups 1st picture didn’t work out very well but we got some of the picture on our paper and most of the color for that part. On the 2nd picture my group had more of the picture. It was so hard as a runner because I couldn’t touch the paper and it was frustrating, but my group kept explaining and we managed to get some of it done. My partner and I were finding it hard to describe the picture and then remember the color.  Have you ever done a task master before? If so what were you creating?

The Terrific Ngahere Bush Walk.

In Te Ngahere we went for a walk in the bush. We did this because we were researching some of the animals in the ngahere. I was researching about a Green Gecko. Did you know that a Green geckos scientific name is  Naultinus grayii? I didn’t see a gecko but I saw some fish in the bush and their colours were black and white. I didn’t know there were fish in the ngahere so I only just learnt that there are fish in the native bush. My class had to walk down a long street to get to the bush. We loved this because we saw lots of plants like Ponga ferns, flowers and more. Have you ever seen a green gecko? If so where were you?

Some fun work I really enjoyed

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about food webs. We had to make a copy of a google drawing that had pictures of native birds and predators on it. We put some arrows pointing to what native bird gets eaten by what predator.  I learnt that when rats eat Kererus and Tuis its called energy transfer. After that I knew what to do and it was so much easier. Here are 3 differences between my picture and the teachers. My picture has less arrows pointing to the stoat, I don’t have all the information of what eats invertebrates and less arrows pointing to the Kereru. The arrows point to what eats what to represent what the consumer eat. Have you ever made a food web? If so what was your about?

A Tsunami That was Actually Nerve-racking

On the 5th of March Paihia and a small bit of the North Island had an evacuation because people thought that we were going to have a tsunami.

We had to walk up a hill to evacuate school. It was hard because I was trying to not think about tsunami.  When we did this it was frightful because everybody thought the tsunami was coming and it freaked us out. Everybody thought it would wash our houses away. Our teachers went down the hill and got our bags so we could eat our lunch, but also people gave us lollies, our office lady gave us a mint and we got sausages from Fritz’s Wieners. Me and some of my friends were scared. Have you ever seen a tsunami? Have you ever been stuck up a hill for 5 hours during a tsunami?

Some Work I Absolutely Love

In Te Ngahere we have been creating a class tree. First we had to color some branches that our teacher printed out. Once that was finished we colored in a leaf that had our name on it.

It took us some time but we completed it. After that Aaron, Azure and I had to put the tree together and we had to outline and color it. We only had a little bit of time to do it so when people finished all their work they had to color it. It was so fun but then we had to tidy up. Azure and I wanted to keep coloring the tree but we couldn't. The next day our teacher said we could continue coloring. Coloring the tree was something we could do if all our work was green. Have you ever put a tree together?

What do you Know About Flying Planes

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about paper planes and how they work. We had to make paper planes from a youtube clip that an intermediate school made. Then we went to the court to fly them.

I learnt that when you add flaps to a paper plane it creates drag. After we flew them we came back inside and made some adjustments to our plane. To do that we cut flaps in the back of the plane wings to create drag. We found out how to add drag to the paper plane. Usually when you create drag on your plane it goes slower but ours went further. When we created the plane I read the instructions again and you are not suppose to do it on a windy day, and it was a very windy day.
Have you ever made a paper plane? Have you ever created drag on your plane? This link is where we got our information from Click Here.

Check out this great Kawa of Care work!

This week in Te Ngahere we made a kawa of care animation. We had to make ether an animation or a comic strip. I chose to make an animation. I learnt that you can break your chromebook charger by plugging it in with the case on. To make the screencastify it took us morning tea, lunchtime and some of our work time to screencastify, because we keep messing up the script. So it was hard to make but in the end we completed it. Have you ever broken a kawa of care rule? Did your chromebook get broken after you did? (if you did.)

!Mind Blowing Facts About Roy Lichtenstein!

On the 10th of February Te Ngahere started some work about Roy Lichtenstein. Roy Lichtenstein was a famous pop artist in the 1960s. We had to write down 6 or more facts about him. After we wrote down the facts about him we had to write down what techniques we were going to use for our artwork. I said I was going to use benday dots, full color and brush strokes, but I only used benday dots and full color. Here is the link to my facts. Do you know anything about Roy Lichtenstein? Have you seen any of his paintings?
